The race to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Pedro Goncalves has continued to hot up as Arsenal have now joined the list of clubs interested in signing the Portuguese star. The midfielder was signed by Sporting as a direct replacement for his compatriot Bruno Fernandes who left and joined Manchester United in January 2020 and he has proven to be a worthy signing since then.

His fine performances on the pitch have seen him likened to Fernandes, given that both players are gifted with the ability to make things happen on the pitch with their brilliant style of play. While Manchester United and Liverpool were the two English clubs earlier linked with signing him, Arsenal have now entered the equation and the Gunners manager Mikel Arteta believes the midfielder could be the key signing his side needs to challenge for trophies next season.
Goncalves is naturally a right-wing player but is flexible enough to anchor roles like central midfield and attacking midfield as well. He has superb passing vision, is skillful on the ball, can pick up teammates without stress, and also has an eye for goal.
His release clause currently stands at £52 million and why Manchester United are the only club that can comfortably afford that fee among the three clubs, Arsenal will be looking to go into negotiations in a bid to beat down the asking price for the midfield star. However, Sporting could be unwilling to sell unless the release clause is triggered.
