Manchester United have reportedly contacted the agent of star player Bruno Fernandes in their bid to sign young defender Nuno Mendes from Sporting Lisbon when the transfer window reopens in the coming weeks. Miguel Pinto is the agent of both Fernandes and Mendes.

The report from The Sun revealed that Manchester United have made contact with Pinto on the possibility of signing Mendes from Sporting Lisbon in time for the start of next season.

Mendes has become a first team regular at Sporting Lisbon at the age of just 18. The young left-back contributed one goal and one assist in 29 league games for his club as he helped Sporting Lisbon to end their league title drought this season. He has been attracting the interest of a lot of the big clubs on the European stage including Manchester City who are said to be plotting a £52m deal for the teenager.

Mendes signed a new deal at Sporting Lisbon last year until the end of the 2024/25 campaign and it would take a lot of money to prise him away from Sporting Lisbon this summer. The teenager is a versatile player that can also play on the left side of attack.

Manchester United have a lot of options on the left side of defence with the likes of Luke Shaw and Alex Telles but that has not stopped them from being linked with Mendes who’s a regular for his club in the Portuguese top flight. The Red Devils signed Brazilian international Telles just last summer but he has been linked with a move away from the club after playing second fiddle to Shaw for the most part of the season. The arrival of Telles from FC Porto of Portugal last summer has pushed Shaw to be better.
